How Drones Are Transforming Search and Locate Operations
When a person goes missing, every minute counts. Drone technology — particularly thermal imaging — has fundamentally changed what's possible in search and locate operations, covering ground faster and more effectively than traditional methods.
The Challenge of Search Operations
Traditional search operations are resource-intensive, slow, and limited by human endurance and visibility. A ground search team can cover perhaps a kilometre of difficult terrain in an hour. A drone equipped with thermal imaging can survey the same area in minutes — and do so in darkness, through light vegetation, and in conditions that would ground a manned aircraft.
For families and organisations dealing with a missing person, this capability is not just operationally significant. It can be the difference between a successful outcome and a tragedy.
How Thermal Imaging Finds People
The human body maintains a core temperature of approximately 37°C. Against a cooler background — open ground, vegetation, water — this heat signature is clearly visible to a thermal camera, even when the person is stationary, concealed, or unconscious.
At night, when ambient temperatures drop and the contrast between a person and their surroundings increases, thermal imaging becomes even more effective. Our DJI Matrice 4T carries a high-sensitivity thermal sensor capable of detecting a human heat signature at distances of several hundred metres, allowing us to systematically clear large search areas with confidence.
The Stratus Intelligence Approach
Our Search & Locate service is available as a goodwill service — we do not charge for genuine missing person searches. When you contact us, we will:
- Gather information about the missing person, last known location, and terrain
- Conduct an immediate airspace and weather assessment
- Deploy to the search area as quickly as possible
- Conduct a systematic thermal search, recording all footage
- Communicate findings to you and, where appropriate, to the relevant authorities in real time
We work alongside police search teams, mountain rescue, and other emergency services, and our operators are trained to operate effectively in high-pressure environments.
Beyond Missing Persons
The same thermal search capability has applications beyond missing persons:
- Livestock location — Finding animals that have strayed or become injured in large fields or woodland
- Wildlife monitoring — Locating and counting nocturnal species for ecological surveys
- Security applications — Perimeter monitoring and intruder detection for commercial and industrial sites
- Disaster response — Locating survivors in the aftermath of structural collapse, flooding, or other emergencies
When to Call Us
If you are dealing with a missing person situation, call us immediately on 0121 387 4879 or 0330 133 4603. Do not wait to see if the person returns — early deployment significantly increases the probability of a successful outcome.
For non-emergency search applications, contact us to discuss your requirements and we will advise on the most appropriate approach.
